Job Summary:
The Substation Foreman is responsible for overseeing and managing
the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of
electrical substations. This role involves supervising a team of
electricians, technicians, and other crew members to ensure that
work is completed safely, on time, and according to design
specifications, codes, and standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervision & Leadership:
- Lead a team of electricians and technicians in the
construction, maintenance, and operation of electrical
substations.
- Assign tasks, monitor progress, and ensure the quality of work
performed by the crew.
- Train and mentor team members, promoting a culture of safety
and professionalism.
- Project Management:
- Review project plans, drawings, and specifications to ensure
work is completed accurately and on schedule.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and other
stakeholders to ensure smooth workflow and communication.
- Monitor project timelines and report progress, delays, and any
issues to the supervisor or project manager.
- Ensure that all materials, tools, and equipment needed for
substation projects are available and in good working order.
- Safety Compliance:
- Ensure all safety protocols and procedures are followed,
including lockout/tagout and other hazard controls.
- Conduct regular safety meetings and inspections to identify and
mitigate risks in the work environment.
- Maintain a safe working environment in compliance with OSHA,
NEC, and other local, state, and federal safety regulations.
- Electrical System Installation & Maintenance:
- Oversee the installation and maintenance of transformers,
circuit breakers, relays, control wiring, and other high-voltage
equipment within the substation.
- Coordinate with testing and commissioning teams to ensure
proper startup and functioning of substation systems.
- Troubleshoot and resolve electrical problems in substations,
ensuring minimal downtime and system disruptions.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Keep accurate records of daily activities, work performed, and
crew hours.
- Review and approve time sheets, work orders, and other
documentation as required.
- Provide regular reports to project management regarding project
status, material needs, and crew performance.
- Collaboration:
- Coordinate with other trades, contractors, and utility
representatives to ensure effective integration of substation
systems with other power infrastructure.
- Maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, addressing
concerns and ensuring project requirements are met.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum of 5-10 years of experience working in
high-voltage substation environments, with at least 2 years in a
supervisory or foreman role.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a
certified apprenticeship program in electrical work or a similar
field is preferred.
- Licenses/Certifications:
- Must hold a valid Journeyman or Master Electrician license
(state-dependent).
- Relevant certifications in high-voltage systems, substation
maintenance, and OSHA safety standards are a plus.
